Shelling Around Southport, NC - Margaret Rudd & Associates

The first day of summer will be here soon, and with that comes National Seashell Day, a reminder to take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and appreciate the natural beauty that's all around us.

Families looking at Southport homes for sale often ask Our REALTORS®  about local waterfront activities. We think that shelling is one of the best ways to enjoy a day on the water, and, best of all, you can use some of the treasures you find to decorate your new home!

Using Southport as your launching point, you can easily reach some of the best beaches for shelling either by boat or by car. Here are a few great destinations you'll want to visit this summer.

  1. Oak Island / Caswell Beach
One of the easiest shelling destinations to reach from Southport, Oak Island/Caswell Beach is a short 10 to 15-minute drive from the heart of the city. There are multiple beach access points, making it a convenient spot for day-trippers to spend a couple of hours searching for shells.

Try to plan your shelling adventures during the spring, fall, or winter months when the beach is far less crowded. This will give you the best chance to find unique shells, and you're likely to have stretches of beach all to yourself. Before you head home for the day, take a drive around so you can familiarize yourself with some of the great Oak Island homes for sale.

  2. Bald Head Island
Surrounded by the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean, Bald Head Island is another popular destination for both tourists and locals. You can reach it by taking the Bald Head Island passenger ferry from Deep Point Marina in Southport.

Once you arrive, you'll want to rent a golf cart or bicycle, since there are no vehicles allowed in the area. Make your way either to the east coast of the island along the Atlantic or to the southernmost point. Both are known for offering excellent shelling opportunities. Once you spend some time on this small, quaint island, you'll quickly understand why Bald Head Island homes for sale are in such high demand.

  3. Fort Fisher
Fort Fisher, located on the southern end of Pleasure Island, is an excellent place to start your shelling adventure. The Fort Fisher State Recreation Area offers six miles of undeveloped beachfront. Carefully check the tidal pools along the rock-wall boarders,  and you're likely to find some beautiful hidden treasures.

You can easily reach Fort Fisher from Southport by hopping on the Southport/Fort Fisher Ferry. Simply drive your vehicle on board and enjoy the approximately 35-minute ride which offers exceptional views of the Cape Fear River. Make sure you bring your camera, as the ride itself is a memorable experience. If you prefer, you can also reach Fort Fisher by driving up along the coast.
