The maritime community of Southport is well-known for having one of North Carolina's most popular 4th of July Celebrations, with nearly two full weeks of events that draw visitors from throughout NC and beyond. Thanks to the popularity and long history of Southport's Independence Day celebration, it was declared the NC 4th of July Festival in 1972.

The festival features tons of patriotic activities, fun attractions for the whole family, great opportunities to explore the community, and of course a spectacular fireworks display when the big day arrives.   Every member of the family will find something to love about the NC 4th of July Festival, with fun activities and one full day of children's games. On July 3 at Fort Johnson Garrison Lawn and Waterfront Park, kids will have the chance to participate in a day of fun-filled activities. There will be watermelon rolling, sack races, and other old-time games that never go out of style. On July 2, kids can enjoy free face-painting, creative activities, crafts, and more at Keziah Park.

The first day of summer will be here soon, and with that comes National Seashell Day, a reminder to take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and appreciate the natural beauty that's all around us.

1. Oak Island / Caswell Beach
   One of the easiest shelling destinations to reach from Southport, Oak Island/Caswell Beach is a short 10 to 15-minute drive from the heart of the city. There are multiple beach access points, making it a convenient spot for day-trippers to spend a couple of hours searching for shells. 
   
   Try to plan your shelling adventures during the spring, fall, or winter months when the beach is far less crowded. This will give you the best chance to find unique shells, and you're likely to have stretches of beach all to yourself. Before you head home for the day, take a drive around so you can familiarize yourself with some of the great Oak Island homes for sale.

There's something about warm weather and sunshine that makes music sound even better. Our REALTORS® have the lowdown on the best concerts taking place around Brunswick County this summer.

• Ocean Isle Beach Concert Series - 5 W. Third St., Ocean Isle Beach 28469
  This year, the popular Ocean Isle Beach Concert Series has a new home. Festivities are moving to the spacious lot next to Town Hall, right across the street from the previous site at the Museum of Coastal Carolina. The series will move to its permanent home once the exciting upgrades are completed at Ocean Isle Beach Park, which will also be an advantage to buyers of Ocean Isle Beach homes for sale.
  
  Several of this summer's featured performers, such as Band of Oz on July 5 and the Embers on July 12, offer the best in iconic Carolina beach music. Other highlights include the Legacy Motown Revue on June 28 and the high-energy dance tunes of the Extraordinaires on July 26.
  
  Shows take place from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. every Friday night through September 6. Admission is free, but bring lawn chairs or blankets and a cash donation for the local food pantry.
