Fall Decorating Tips

Have you fallen in love with autumn? Our real estate agents love this time of the year, particularly because so many homeowners embrace the season by decorating their porches. If you're looking for a way to celebrate the season with festive décor, consider these five decorating tips for your front porch.

  1. Create a Template
If you're a homeowner who loves to decorate for every major holiday, you'll surely be busy between October and December. To streamline the process of decorating for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the winter holidays, create a design template for your porch that works for all holidays. For instance, plan to use a door wreath, festive furniture cushions, and a welcome mat in each of your themes. By having a plan for all seasons, you can quickly put up and take down your porch décor.

  2. Set Up Temporary Seating
If you don't often use your porch for entertaining, consider utilizing this space during the fall. With cooler temperatures, now is the perfect time to set up temporary outdoor seating along your porch. Set out comfortable chairs or benches in festive fall colors where you and your family or guests can enjoy warm apple cider on cool nights.

  3. Incorporate Seasonal Items
If you're not interested in putting up holiday-specific decorations, you can use natural seasonal elements throughout the fall season. Pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks, and hay bales are classic hallmarks of the season. You can also incorporate fall foliage such as sweet alyssum, Russian sage, stonecrop, aster, pansies, and chrysanthemums to give your porch a burst of fall freshness.

  4. Non-traditional Color Schemes
When we think of the autumn season, oranges, browns, and reds often come to mind. Change things up a bit and integrate a different color scheme into your porch decorations. A neutral color scheme using whiles and grays, while still incorporating autumn symbolism with pumpkins or apple crates, is an elegant and subtle way to celebrate the season.

  5. Seasonal & Sporty
For many homeowners, the fall season means the return of their favorite sports. Instead of celebrating the fall months and weather, showcase your love for your favorite team. Yard signs, flags, banners, and more are perfect décor pieces that can decorate your porch throughout the season. Or combine your love of sports and the fall season and try your hand at carving a jack-o-lantern with your favorite team's logo. Not feeling that crafty? You can always paint the pumpkin your favorite team's colors instead!
