Now a museum and visitor center highlighting the town's history, Fort Johnston is the perfect place to begin a historical walking tour of Southport. Stroll the museum and discover over 250 years of history. When you're finished, be sure to take in the amazing views from the mouth of Cape Fear River before venturing to other local landmarks.

    The Ingram Planetarium is simply out of this world. There are tons of fun interactive exhibits in the Paul Dennis Science Hall.     Your trip to Southport is the only time when you'll want to go to jail. The Old Brunswick County Jail Museum has free tours that guide visitors through the cells and upper floor of the jail. Though it's the "Old" Brunswick County Jail, it's actually the new jail built in 1904 to replace the previous one after it burned down. It's been out of commission since the 1970s, but you can still see the graffiti on the walls drawn by former prisoners.

  4. North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport — 204 E. Moore St., Southport, NC 28461
    Avid sailors, boaters, and even land-lubbers will enjoy visiting the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. Climb aboard and learn all about the history of sailing in the Lower Cape Fear region. There are interactive exhibits that depict the area's maritime history through today.

  5. Saint Philip's Episcopal Church — 205 E. Moore St., Southport, NC 24861
    Saint Philip's Episcopal Church has endured many challenges over the years, but it continues to endure. It was built in 1843 in honor of the original church barring its name, St. Philip's of Brunswick Town. The original St. Philips burned down after only eight years, but its replacement has since stood the test of time.
