All of May is National Photography Month. The holiday, first implemented in 1987, offers an opportunity to celebrate the impact photography plays in modern society and all of our lives. It's one of our real estate agents' favorite times of the year.
The reason for that is simple. We live in an extraordinarily photogenic place. North Carolina's Brunswick County is a photographer's dream come true, and if you're looking to snap the perfect shot for your photo album or your Instagram account, we have some ideas about where in the Southport area you should look!
- Southport Waterfront Park - 146-176 E Bay St, Southport, NC 28461
Overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway just a few blocks from the shops and cafes of Downtown Southport, Waterfront Park is a favorite spot for locals to relax and enjoy the cool ocean breeze. It's an excellent place to take some pictures too. Watch for fishing boats on their way out to sea, gulls wheeling overhead, and kids playing along the shoreline. The park is within walking distance of many Southport homes for sale, it's a great place to experience the picturesque beauty of Southport's waterfront.
- Sunset Beach Fishing Pier - 101 W Main St, Sunset Beach, NC 28468
You'll want to bring your camera as well as your fishing pole when you visit Sunset Beach Fishing Pier. This 900-foot pier creates a striking image as it extends out into the surf, and it's a great place to capture one of Brunswick County's spectacular sunsets. Sunset Beach Pier is the southernmost pier in South Carolina, but if you're looking for more great pier views, Brunswick County has many. Be sure to check out the Ocean Crest Pier and the Holden Beach Pier as well.
- Kindred Spirit Mailbox - Sunset Beach, NC 28468
You wouldn't think a simple mailbox would be an especially interesting subject, but the Kindred Spirit Mailbox in Sunset Beach is one of the most often-photographed sites in the area. Nestled among the sand dunes of Bird Island a stone's throw from the shore, the mailbox is filled with handwritten messages from visitors. You're free to read them and maybe add your own while snapping photos of the iconic mailbox.
- Bald Head Island Lighthouse - 101 Light House Wynd, Bald Head Island, NC 28461
You can always count on a lighthouse for a great photo-op. The Bald Head Island Lighthouse, affectionately known as "Old Baldy," is the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina. Located a quick ferry ride away from the mainland on the beautiful (and car-free) Bald Head Island, it's a striking lighthouse from ground level. But be sure to also take in the view from the top, 108 spiral steps above the beach. If Old Baldy doesn't satisfy your lighthouse itch, Oak Island Lighthouse is another great one in Brunswick County.
- Southport Marsh Walk - Brunswick St, Southport, NC 28461
The salt marshes that play such a crucial role in the coastal North Carolina ecosystem are on full display at the Southport Marsh Walk. This 1/8-mile wooden boardwalk meanders through the wild marshlands that lie at the western edge of Downtown Southport and provide some spectacular views that are ripe for photography. It's also a beloved spot for local bird watchers. Keep your camera at the ready and watch for species, including great egret, royal tern, great blue heron, and white ibis.
