American cuisine is all about comfort. Here are the best local spots to visit as the cold weather rolls in.

Thousands of people love to travel to Southport each year, and some even make it their home. Southport is famous for its charming atmosphere, serene ocean breezes, and gorgeous scenery; it's also a fantastic spot to grab delicious American eats.

Our real estate agents suggest taking a few hours to enjoy some of Southport's top eateries. Here are a few can't-miss spots.

  1. Oliver's on the Cape Fear
As the name suggests, Oliver's on the Cape Fear is a waterfront restaurant that offers stunning views of the Cape Fear River. Take in the views from the outside terrace, or opt for a seat in the inviting indoor dining room. The menu includes classic Southern cuisine, like shrimp and grits and hush puppies. Or, try a fresh seafood dish, like the Calabash "Cape Fear" seafood platter that includes fried shrimp, oysters, and flounder.

Don't leave without grabbing dessert! The salted caramel ice cream or burnt sugar bourbon ice cream are terrific treats on a hot summer day. Oliver's on the Cape Fear accepts reservations, and it offers gluten-free and vegetarian dishes.
  1. Mr. P's Bistro
Mr. P's Bistro is located at 309 N. Howe Street in the lower Cape Fear area. Reservations are recommended. This casual spot is a family-owned restaurant that's over 60 years in the making. Stop by when you're in the mood for a slab of prime rib or a plate of fresh seafood.

Start your meal with crispy fried green tomatoes or a platter of oysters. Or, grab a bowl of Smith Island seafood okra gumbo or low country clam chowder. Try one of the wine offerings from Mr. P's Bistro's extensive wine list, or sample one of the special martinis.
  1. Blue Cow Grille
Not in the mood for seafood? Stop by the Blue Cow Grille for one of the best burgers in Southport! The Blue Cow Grille is operated by a husband and wife culinary team and is located in a late 19th-century historical building. Customers rave about the unique atmosphere and eclectic decor, such as the handmade stained glass blue cow that greets them when they arrive.

Though burgers are a customer favorite, the Blue Cow Grille also serves a variety of salads, tacos, and sandwiches. A basket of home-fried chips or fried pickles is the perfect complement to your meal.
  1. Moore Street Oyster Bar
Take a break from hunting for Southport homes for sale and check out the Moore Street Oyster Bar. The restaurant is situated in a historical building at 110 East Moore Street that dates back to the late 1800s. It's a great spot for an appetizing meal, cold beverage, and great conversation. Moore Street Oyster Bar is an oyster pub that offers a variety of hard-to-find bourbons, including Angels Envy, Michters 100 Year, and Pappy 12 Year (while supplies last). They also serve an extensive menu of wines and craft beer.

The menu includes steamer pots of clams, snow crab, mussels, king crab, oysters, or shrimp. You can even choose your own seasonings and create your own steamer pot.
