    Designed by George Cobb, the Bald Head Island Golf Course opened in 1974 as a private country club course. It was recently restored by Tim Cate and emerged with a more natural-looking and challenging design. Cate transformed 35 rough acres into sandy areas with native grasses, adding graceful sabal palms and glimpses of wildlife. There are also the Miniverde greens, new bunkers, and a new irrigation system. This course is just 8.7 miles from Southport but entails a ferry ride — what better way to see the coastal waters?

  4. Oak Island Par 3 at South Harbor Golf Course. 4166 Vanessa Dr., Southport
    All levels of golfers enjoy playing on the lush, manicured greens at Oak Island Par 3 at South Harbor Golf Course, a public golf course. You're welcome to rent a cart and clubs, but if you'd like to walk, you're sure to enjoy the lush fairways, and you can savor glimpses of the Intracoastal Waterway while you golf. Par 3 courses, which allow players three shots to make par, are the shortest courses, and so are fun for players of all levels.

Designed by renowned architect George Cobb, it opened in 1962. There are 37 bunkers and water in play on nine different holes. It's a challenging course, with wind frequently in play, as veterans of the course can attest. As you play, you will revel in the natural setting, which includes habitat for waterfowl, ocean birds, and alligators. The lush setting is rich with coastal vegetation, including Live Oaks and Yaupon holly trees. There is also a full practice facility with sand traps, putting green, and driving range.
