April
26

Want to keep your dog active and experience some local scenery? Here are the spots to visit.

April is Active Dog Month, and it's time to celebrate with your pup. Southport is home to a variety of gorgeous locations that are perfect for enjoying outdoor time with your four-legged family members. Our real estate agents suggest exploring these places in and around Southport.

  1. Dutchman Creek Park
Located at 4750 Fish Factory Road, Dutchman Creek Park is a free 30-acre park with areas for walking, restrooms, a playground, and a picnicking space. There's also pier fishing and a free boat access area if you want to try to catch dinner.
  1. Lowe-White Memorial Park
Lowe-White Memorial Park is situated at the corner of Leonard Street and Willis Drive. There's an expansive network of walking trails that weave in and out of the wooded area in the park, offering shade and cooler temperatures as you walk.

Before you leave, check out the enclosed half-sized basketball court, the enclosed tennis courts, the playground, and the tranquil overlook area.
  1. The Kent Mitchell Nature Trail
When you need a break from checking out Southport homes for sale, head over to The Kent Mitchell Nature Trail on Bald Head Island. There are actually multiple trails along the main trail that make it ideal for different abilities and ages.

The easiest trail is extremely level and will take you through the forest. If you decide to do the main trail, it'll take you about 15 minutes, and the entire trail is paved.

Some trails are unpaved, so steer clear of these trails when the ground is wet to avoid damaging the land and wet, muddy paws. Regardless of which trail you select, you'll see a variety of plants and wildlife.
  1. The Salty Dog Park of Oak Island
The Salty Dog Park of Oak Island is an off-leash dog park located along the picturesque Cape Fear River at 4410 Fish Factory Road. You can visit the park daily from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM.

There's a section for smaller dogs (under 25 pounds) and an area for larger dogs. Make sure to bring a bowl and water for your dog and supplies for cleaning up their waste.
  1. The Environmental Overlook Trail
The Environmental Overlook Trail consists of multiple trails that traverse along the Intercoastal Waterway, along saltwater marshes, and through several beachfront neighborhoods. You can start the trail behind the Oak Island Recreation Center.

This lovely walking route will provide endless opportunities to see coastal plants and animals, including fiddler crabs, egrets, and salamanders.

Regular exercise is essential to optimize a dog's health and overall behavior. Southport is a fantastic place for households with pets, offering multiple trails and areas to give them plenty of exercise.
