Holden Beach’s roots as a family-community dates back to before the American Revolution. When the English government offered tracks of land to early North Carolina settlers, Benjamin Holden purchased four tracks of land, and the barrier island between his plantation and the ocean. Over the next seven generations, the Holden family continued to develop the barrier island, known as Holden Beach.
In 1954, the island's 300 homes and a turn-bridge were nearly destroyed by Hurricane Hazel. The town slowly recovered, officially incorporating in 1969. By 1986, the town supported nearly 1,900 homes prompting the town to build a new steel and concrete bridge allowing better access to the island.
