Beginning in the early 19th century, settlers discovered that the quiet beauty of Oak Island truly was a special place. From 1836 to 1945, the community served as a military base with the construction and occupation of Fort Caswell. The fort helped guard the mouth of the Cape Fear River, protecting Wilmington, located up river. Though originally a military hold, Oak Island gained popularity in the late-1930s, when Ernest Felder Middleton began to develop the land, selling lots for $350 dollars. The town of Oak Island was officially formed in 1999, incorporated when Long Beach and Yaupon Beach consolidated. Oak Island continues to expand, now including portions of the mainland near the island's bridge.
