As of 2010, Sunset Beach is home to more than 3,400 year-round residents. The island features approximately 1,200 homes, a combination of single-family homes and condos. In the 1980s, developers purchased land from the International Paper Company to create the Oyster Bay Golf Course and community. Following the success of Oyster Bay, communities were developed including Sea Trail Resort and Sandpiper Bay. Ocean Ridge Plantation lies just outside Sunset Beach town limits and is considered a sister community. Beautiful sunsets and miles of serene beaches originally attracted developer Mannon C. Gore to Sunset Beach, originally known as Bald Beach. He purchased the land in 1955, and renamed the island Sunset Beach. By 1958, Mr. Gore opened his island paradise to the public with the installation of a unique, floating pontoon bridge. That same year, Gore began selling homes on the island and it has continued to grow every year since.
In 1963, with 30 residents, Sunset Beach was officially incorporated. Seeing the rapid growth of the island, and wanting to preserve it as a family paradise, town developers agreed to limit commercial development on the island. Today, the town features shops and restaurants attractive to vacationers. Developers also preserved the serene, tranquil feeling that initially attracted Mr. Gore.
Sunset Beach students attend Brunswick County Schools. There are nine elementary schools spread throughout the area, with five middle schools and five high schools. In high school, students can choose to attend college preparatory schools, specifically designed to help student achieve higher education goals. Located midway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, Sunset Beach is part of a larger metropolitan area with many employment opportunities. The area is home to many top employers in a variety of arenas including trade, transportation and utilities, education, public works, manufacturing and health services. Top employers include Brunswick County Board of Education, Brunswick County, Progress Energy Service and Wal-Mart.
